Question

When a woman is menstruating and is experiencing Istihaadha 1 , how can she perform Wudu 2 ? If she experiences heavy bleeding, does she have to carry on changing her underwear and clothes again and again? Will her salah be accepted if she her prayers in this condition? Please clarify as much as possible. Thank you Anonymous Pakistan

Answer

It is quite clear that directives of the Shariah regarding menses do not apply to Istihaadha because Istihaadha is a disease and it is not a state of uncleanness. Thus a woman should return to her normal routine after her menstrual discharges stops. There is no difference in performing wudu before or during this irregular bleeding. A woman must consider herself quite normal and she should perform all her religious obligations in a normal way. There is no need to change her underwear again and again. Only wudu is sufficient. However if she feels better by changing or she finds no difficulty in changing her under clothing, then she may do so but the Shariah does not direct her to do that. There is no reason to ask that whether her salah will be accepted or not? Just as there is no controversy regarding whether or not salah is accepted during headache or fever, similarly there is no reason why it would not be accepted during istihaadha . Rather I think the abounding mercy of God will give more weight to such deeds, which are preformed during abnormal or irregular situations because when a person fulfills his obligations in difficult circumstances it is indicative of more submission on his part.
