Question

Title: Working for Non-Islamic Banks Question: I am a Financial Accountant (Student of Chartered institute of Management Accountants of London ) working for a Private Company in Colombo , Sri Lanka. Every day I deal with the bankers in arranging facilities which are all Riba Based, Namely Term Loan Facilities, Import Loan facilities, Leases, Overdraft Facilities, Etc. For this purpose I write reports, proposals and presentations. Also I argue with Bankers for theses facilities on behalf of the company. Not only this, there are situations where I have hidden our real financial position of the company to obtain these facilities. Further I have witnessed our Directors personal loans which we have taken to finance the company. I am not in a position to advice the management (Company is not owned by the Muslims) to go for the Islamic Way of financing since in Colombo we have very few (only two or Three) Financial Institution which operate under Islamic system (Still the bank license is not given to those institution). Further these operate in very small levels and conditions of which will not suite for our company, more importantly in real term which are more costly than conventional Riba based transaction. We have very small number of Large companies which are owned by the Muslims in Colombo , even most of those companies contain Interest Bearing Loans and Borrowing in their Balance Sheet. In the above given context where do I stand. Is my current job is allowed or not, whether I should leave the company and go to middle east countries in search of a job or should I start a business on my own. What is the status of many Muslim Accountants and Finance mangers, Directors working in non Muslim Company and / or non Muslim Country. Actually, what is correct from the Al -Quran and Hadees perspective. Ii hope insha allah you will clear my doubts. Answer: My dear brother, as a principle, it should be kept in mind that, generally speaking, working in a non-Muslim company or residing in a non-Muslim country is not prohibited by Islam. One may work in a Muslim or a non-Muslim company, as long as one considers the work done by that company to fall under the ambit of the activities allowable under the Islamic law. For my opinion regarding working in a bank, please refer to one of my earlier responses on the topic, which you may access at: Is Present Day Banking Based on Riba I hope this helps.
