Women Cutting Their Hair
Question
I am a young girl of 16. I live in Mauritius. I am a Muslim. My question is simple: do women have the right to cut their hair? I know we must not imitate men, but do we have the right to cut it a length longer than our shoulder? if no, do we have the right to only trim it, so as the hair to be in better health?
Answer
Yes, absolutely, women do have the right to cut their hair. The length is a personal choice and there is nothing in Islam that would prohibit it. So a woman may cut it as short as she likes or keep it as long as she likes. Of course, the only restriction in this regard may be to maintain the natural difference in the appearance of men and women, as per the noble norms of the society. Thus, woman should not aspire to take up a physical appearance of men - whether in hair styles or in attire - and vice versa. I hope I have clarified the issue. God knows best.
