Why Does God Allow Bad Things To Happen?
Question
Title: Why Does God Allow Bad Things To Happen? Question: I'm a little bit confused about one thing...if God is almighty and merciful, why we have millions dying for hunger? why there are poor disabled kids even though they have done nothing before their birth? why if God is a guidance to all his creatures, he doesn't stop violence? has he became weaker than Satan?? he loves his humans, then why he lets them decide and have the option of killing each other? why if all these indicated above are the humans' choice, then he has the right to question God.!? why are we allowed to talk to him and still he doesn't stop any of above?? Answer: Believing in God should include adopting and appreciating the perspective that comes with it. If we believe in God then (as Muslims) we also believe that life in this world (with all the suffering and happiness that is associated with it) is nothing but a deceptive pleasure ( Ala Imran 3:185) and play and amusement ( Al An'aam 6:32); that the main place for us to be is the hereafter; that this world is only a passing enjoyment ( Fussilat 41:39); that the whole objective of our creation was to worship God ( Al Zariyat 51:56); that we are in this world to be tested ( Al Mulk 67:2) and that one of the things for which we are tested is the way we go through difficulties in our life ( Al Baqarah 2:155). I invite you to read all the above mentioned verses (which are only a selection of many) carefully. It is only after appreciating the above that we will be able to understand the true meaning of God being almighty and merciful. I think if one reasonably understands the above perspective then all of the issues you raised will become redundant. However, I will make a very small comment for each of the questions you asked hopefully to assist with the above: "If God is almighty and merciful, why we have millions dying for hunger?" He is almighty and merciful in giving us freedom of choice, sending us guidance for salvation and judging us in the Hereafter based on our attitude and reactions to suffering (being us or others). He also saves us from many calamities based upon His wisdom, some of which we often do not even realise. "Why there are poor disabled kids even though they have done nothing before their birth?" God knows best of course but one reason is for them to be tested and to test us who are aware of their suffering and are capable and are living (comparing to others) in peace and comfort. In addition to this, one should keep in mind that suffering is one of the ingredients that make us human; without it we would lack growth. From every aspect - spiritually, physically, mentally - we are all affected by the suffering we experience. However, just as in nature, what may seem as negative results in a positive outcome. From destruction we may see development; from poison, we get medicine; from illnesses we find cures and so on. Tragic as it may seem at the moment, when the grandeur of all is recognized then the tragedy takes on a new meaning even when we are hurt by it. "Why if God is a guidance to all his creatures, he doesn't stop violence?" Because He is testing those who commit violence, those who are victims of violence and those who witness it. "Has he become weaker than Satan??" Absolutely not! The created can never become stronger than Creator. Satan himself is part of the testing process. "he loves his humans, then why he lets them decide and have the option of killing each other?" He loves good humans and He tests human beings by giving them choice, so that good and bad become separated. "Why if all these indicated above are the humans' choice, then he has the right to question God.!? why are we allowed to talk to him and still he doesn't stop any of above??" Not sure what you mean here but we are not only allowed but are encouraged to talk to Him and ask Him to bring peace and happiness to the world. This, itself, can be a test. My dear brother, a God without the concept of hereafter, testing, reward and punishment (which is what some of the more modern minds, in particular in the West, believe) will have to answer all the valid questions that you asked above. However, God as introduced by Himself in the Qur'an and other holy books, who is testing us in this temporary world which precedes our real destiny is totally beyond the issues that you raised. From an Akhira (hereafter) perspective, a believer is always happy and satisfied with what he has. If he experiences something good, he will thank God and if he experiences any trouble, he again thanks God for making him worthy enough to be tested. A small kid cries when he is separated from parents and is put into school for the first time. It is only after many years that he realises how thoughtful his parents were who put him in school.
