Question

Title: Who's Faith / Iman is Stronger? Question: Who's Iman / faith is stronger: a person who has a blind faith in his religion and he doesn't want to understand the logics, just blind faith. Or a person who has full faith in his religion but he wants to find out the logical explanations of about his religion for better understanding of his religion. M. Sarosh Butt Pakistan Answer: You are in fact referring to two separate attitudes towards religion. Even though man has generally adopted the former attitude towards religion, yet it seems that the latter attitude is a direct corollary of one's firm faith in God's wisdom. We believe that: He has been bestowed with the faculty of reasoning and understanding by the Almighty; He, in contrast to other living beings, has been made the addressee of God's revelation primarily because of being bestowed with the faculty of reasoning and understanding; God's directives and commandments are based on His wisdom and understanding; and God's revelation has consistently promoted understanding and deliberation. As a natural corollary of these points, we should naturally be inclined towards trying to understand the reasons for all of the directives of God. It, however, needs to be mentioned that the Qur'an clearly promotes and recommends the latter of the two attitudes that you have referred. The Qur'an is a book that consistently promotes deliberation over God's message and signs. It is a book that strongly condemns the blindness of those, whom God has bestowed with the faculty of seeing and the deafness of those whom God has bestowed with the faculty of hearing: The worst of beasts in the sight of God are the deaf the dumb - those, who refuse to deliberate. ( Al-Anfaal 8: 22) I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad July 21, 2002
