Title: Who are Protestant and Catholic Christians? Question: Dear Sir I live in a small city in Pakistan where I can't find any good scholar to answer my questions and after reading different books I can't find the answer to my specific questions...that's why I need your help...please do help me. GOD WILL GIVE YOU THE BENIFIT for that A Muslim Brother.... I have 6 questions about the above topic: Who are Protestants and Catholic Christians? What are the DIFFERENCES between the BELIEFS and BOOKS of Protestants and Catholic Christians? Which Group among Protestants and Catholic Christians believe only NEW TESTAMENT is only needed at today's time and OLD TESTAMENT is no longer needed? Are there any OTHER GROUP of Christians besides Protestants and Catholic Christians? (Mention names and details about them) Which country is having a Law WHOLLY BASED on Christianity in their country just like in SAUDI ARABIA has the entire law based on ISLAM? If there aren't any country having a TOTAL CHRISTIAN law then why is that?? Did any prophet in the OLD and NEW testament say that GOD wants the people on this earth to build their country's law based on GOD'S RULES? And where it is mention in Quran that the country's law must be based on GOD'S RULES only? (Gospel, Chapter and verse numbers of Bible and HOLY QURAN required and detail explanation of the above questions) Khalid Jamil Pakistan Answer: Protestants are adherents of Christianity who broke away from the Roman Catholic Church during the Reformation in the 16 th century. The biggest difference between the two groups is that the Protestants believe in the "New Testament to be the only infallible source and rule of faith and practice." [1] This opposed to the Catholic doctrine in which the Church (tradition, the pope, etc...) share in the development of the faith and interpretation of scripture. Catholics believe the Immaculate Conception in which Mary was born free from sin but Protestants deny such a concept. Catholics also believe in the infallibility of the Pope but Protestants deny this as well. Mary the mother of Jesus plays a more important role in Catholicism than in Protestantism. Purgatory is a place Catholics believe in as being somewhere where souls are purified of sins through punishment and then sent to heaven. Protestants do not believe such a place exists. Protestants typically believe that once salvation is attained it can no longer be lost, however Catholics believe you can lose salvation by committing a mortal sin but that you can be forgiven through repentance and confession. These are some of the few points that Protestants and Catholics differ on. For the most part they have the same concepts when it comes to the virgin birth, Heaven/Hell and the Crucifixion. This is not an exhaustive compare and contrast, therefore I recommend you do some further research into the subject. The answer to most of this question lies in answer number one. The major difference in terms of books is the Bible in which there are seven more in the Catholic Bible with a few more chapters not present in the Jewish Old Testament. The Protestant contains 66 books while the Catholic contains 72 books of the Bible. Other ideologies and references are far too exhaustive and detailed for the scope of this answer. Most Christians place greater emphasis on the material in the New Testament rather than the Old Testament, however I am not aware of any major groups that render the Old Testament as obsolete. Some of the more popular denominations are: Jehovah's Witness, Mormons, Eastern Orthodox, Pentecostal, and Baptist etc... Within these groups are more groups however this should suffice. I am not aware of any country that practices "Christian" based government. There are nations built on the concepts of Christianity, but not necessarily run on a Christian governmental scheme. Saudi Arabia does not base its laws entirely on Islam, that's an erroneous assumption. I could not begin to speculate as to why countries do not run on "Christian law." God's "rules" are guidance to mankind. Humans were given the intellect to develop their laws around such rules. None of the scriptures of the Monotheistic faiths contains any such language. I hope I have clarified the issue God knows best Ronnie Hassan June 12, 2003 [1] www.newadvent.org
