Question

What is 'irfaan ? What is `irfaan how to acquire it? Falvi, Pakistan Reply The word " `irfaan " is an Arabic word which means cognizance, awareness, acquaintance etc. The word has two different connotations in Islamic and Sufi literature. In the Islamic literature, the word is generally used to imply a person's knowledge about the attributes of God and the moral codes (also called " sunan ", which is a plural of " sunnat ") applicable to our lives. The word " `irfaan " is generally used to imply the knowledge of the attributes of God and the moral laws of God applicable to human life because knowledge of these spheres helps us not only in the attributive recognition of our Creator but also in establishing a correct relationship with Him. As far as the question regarding how to acquire " `irfaan " is concerned, the Qur'an is the only primary and the most authentic source in this respect. The Qur'an introduces us to all the attributes of our Creator, which are relevant to us. Moreover, the Qur'an also tells us of all the relevant divine moral laws and codes that are relevant to our lives. However, it should be remembered that the word is not a term of the Qur'an, the Sunnah or the Islamic Shari`ah. I hope this helps.
