The Ten Companions Who Were Given the Glad Tidings of Paradise
Question
The Ten Companions Who Were Given the Glad Tidings of Paradise Who are the 10 companions of the Prophet(pbuh) who were awarded paradise (jannah) in their lifetime? If possible, please also relate the sources from the various ahadith books which confirm this accordance and the events [specific achievements of the sahaba] which led to them being awarded paradise. Also, how many of these Sahaba are also recognized by Shiite books of ahadith as belonging to paradise? Jazakallah Khair Khalid Azam, USA Reply It is generally held, on the basis of some narratives ascribed to the Prophet (pbuh) that of all the companions of the Prophet (pbuh), ten were given the glad tidings of having qualified for the eternal bliss of Jannah - i.e. Paradise. However, the Qur'an, on the other hand, tells us - in a general way - that all such Muhaajireen (i.e. those who migrated from Mecca to Medina) and Ansaar (i.e. the locals of Medina, who helped the cause of Islam), who preceded others in believing in the Prophet (pbuh) and following his call and all those who subsequently followed their footsteps, in the best of manners are given the glad tidings of the everlasting bliss of Paradise ( Al-Taubah 9: 100). The Qur'an also tells us that God is pleased with all those believers who took the oath of allegiance to the Prophet (pbuh) at the Hudaybiyah ( Al-Fath 48: 18). We can easily derive from the above explanation that the number of people, who were given the glad tidings of success in the hereafter was far greater than ten. Moreover, keeping the law of the Almighty relating to His messengers in perspective [1] , we may also derive that all those who truly believed in the prophethood of Muhammad (pbuh), have been given the glad tidings of everlasting bliss of God's Paradise, while all those who rejected him, after being fully convinced of his being a true prophet of God shall face the chastisement of hellfire. As far as the second part of your question is concerned (which relates to the Shiite point of view), I would suggest that you address this question to a Shiite scholar. I hope this helps.
