Growing a moustache is not a directive of the Shari`ah . However, according to the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh), if a person has grown a moustache, he should keep it well trimmed and not let it grow wildly. Trimming of moustaches is important both from the aspect of our physical cleansing as well as our spiritual cleansing. The aspect of physical cleansing is obvious and does not need any elaboration. However, from the aspect of spiritual cleansing, huge moustaches have, generally been considered a symbol of arrogance and power. It is due to this reason that the Prophet (pbuh) has stressed that if a Muslim grows a moustache, he should not allow it to grow wildly. I hope this helps.
