Title: The Position of Some Supererogatory Prayers Question: Did the Prophet (pbuh) ever offer the prayers mentioned below: Sala'h-at-Tasbih Ishraq -after sunrise Chasht -before noon Awwabeen -after Maghrib As we know that the Prophet (pbuh) offered the Tahajjud prayer, but l am not sure about the above prayers. There are so many Bid`ah s around I just want to be sure. Regards. Answer: The Sala'h al-Tasbeeh has been mentioned in some narratives reported by Tirmidhiy [1] , Abu Dawood [2] , and Ibn Maajah [3] . Nafl prayers after sunrise and before noon have been reported by Tirmidhiy [4] and Muslim [5] respectively and nafl prayers after Maghrib have been mentioned in Tirmidhiy [6] and Ibn Maajah [7] . All these prayers, irrespective of what one prefers to call them, are actually supererogatory ( nafl ) prayers, generally offered at particular times of a day. Nafl prayers may be offered at any time of the day. Such offering cannot be termed as a ' Bid`ah '. Nevertheless, the evidence whether the Prophet (pbuh) offered these prayers is not conclusive. If the narratives, which report that the Prophet (pbuh) offered these prayers and prompted the Muslims to offer these prayers are held to be reliable, then one may ascribe to the opinion that the Prophet (pbuh) offered these prayers and prompted the Muslims to do so as well. Otherwise, one may be of the opinion that the Prophet (pbuh) did not offer these prayers. In either case, as has been stated earlier, these prayers can, in no case, be termed as bid`ah .
