The Intercession Requested in the Supplication after Adhan
Question
Please inform me about the importance of asking for shafaat of the prophet (pbuh) in dua after call for prayer. Dr. Muhammd Asif Pakistan
Answer
Shafa`at (intercession) is actually one of those phenomena which will manifest the abounding mercy of the Almighty in the hereafter but it will be done only under His kind directives and only for those who will be deemed fit for it by the Almighty. Moreover, neither the norms of justice will be neglected nor will it be against His wisdom and ultimate knowledge and no one will dare to speak before Him except those who would be given permission for this. In other words it can be understood that Shafa`at is like a dua (supplication) and we know that dua is just a request and only those prayers will be accepted which will be deemed fit for acceptance according to God's ultimate knowledge; no one can make God accept his request merely on the basis of the fact that it is he who has put forward the request. As far as asking Shafa`at , in dua after adhan, is concerned, such words are not found in the more authentic narratives ascribed to the Prophet (saw). In one such narrative, the Prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said: من قال حين يسمع النداء اللهم رب هذه الدعوة التامة والصلاة القائمة آت محمدا الوسيلة والفضيلة وابعثه مقاما محمودا الذي وعدته. حلت له شفاعتي يوم القيامة. (البخاري، رقم الحديث 589 ) And even if one finds the related words in some books, they should still be construed only as a request. Saying these words ( وارزقنا شفاعته ) does not, in any way, establish one's right or claim for Jannah . However, the cited narrative and many others narrate that one who will offers this dua , shall deserve the Shafa`at of the Prophet (pbuh). Nevertheless, as I have already clarified, this will not be allowed haphazardly but shall only be allowed for those who will really deserve it according to the eternal knowledge and wisdom of the Almighty. Offering this dua is but a reflection and expression of our sincere love for the Prophet and this love, we know, is a requirement of our faith and the fulfillment of this requirement, in turn, enhances our credit with God, consequently, qualifying us for the Shafa`at of the Prophet which is nothing but indicative of God's benevolence, grace and mercy upon the pious, opening upon them the gateway to Jannah - the ultimate success and eternal abode of happiness - which is not solely a reward for our deeds but a symbol of God's mercy upon the pious.
