The Implication of being Covered with 'Qatarah' and 'Ghabarah' - `Abas 80: 40 - 42
Question
Title: The Implication of being Covered with ‘Qatarah’ and ‘Ghabarah’ - `Abas 80: 40 - 42 Question: I came across a hadith in Sahih Bukhari - Qur'an ( Tafseer of the Prophet (pbuh)) Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "On the Day of Resurrection Abraham will see his father covered with Qatara and Ghabara " Please explain Qatara and Ghabara ? Thanks. Jazzakallah khairun Nauman Ilyas Pakistan Answer: In the related part of your referred narrative, the Prophet (pbuh) is reported to have said: يلقى إبراهيم أباه آزر يوم القيامة وعلى وجه آزر قترة وغبرة (بخاري، رقم الحديث 3172 ) On the Day of Resurrection, Abraham (pbuh) shall meet his father - Aazar - in a state that Aazar's face shall be covered with Qatarah and Ghabarah ... This saying ascribed to the Prophet (pbuh) is clearly an application of the following Qur'anic verse of Surah `Abas (80): وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ تَرْهَقُهَا قَتَرَةٌ أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْكَفَرَةُ الْفَجَرَةُ (عبس 80: 40 - 42 ) On that day, many faces shall be covered with dust, veiled in gloom. These are the rejecters, the disobedient. It should be clear from the translation of `Abas 80: 40 - 42 that the words 'Ghabarah' means dust, while 'Qatarah' means darkness, gloom etc. Covering of the faces with dust and gloom is a metaphorical style, which implies the humility and disgrace, which the rejecters shall be subjected to, on the Day of Judgment. I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad July 12, 2002
