Question
Title: Tawheed at the Time of Prophet Moses (pbuh) Question: Prophet Musa (Allah's Mercy upon him) did Dawah to Firown first. During this time did he also preach against idol worshipping when he was in Egypt? If yes then why when Musaa (Allah's Mercy upon him)went to recieve Thourath why did the Israelies worship the cow? When he was in Egypt did he not preach Tawheed in its entire form? At this time where Israelies believers? Also after recieving Thorath when Musa (Allah's Mercy upon him) went to his people when he saw them idol worshipping he got angry with Haroon(Allah's Mercy upon him),but he replied that he did not say anything against idol worshipping as he was afraid of disunity.7:150.Does that mean unity is more important than Tawheed? Hope you will answer these questions. Thank you.Was Salaam. Answer: You ask: Prophet Musa (Allah's Mercy upon him)did Dawah to Firown first. During this time did he also preach against idol worshipping when he was in Egypt? All the prophets of God preached against any belief or behavior that went against the concept of One God. So indeed the prophet Moses did preach against idol worship. You ask: If yes then why when Musaa (Allah's Mercy upon him)went to recieve Thourath why did the Israelies worship the cow? Unfortunately because they were foolish human beings who strayed from the path of God. They knew praying to the calf was wrong but continued to sin just as people today commit sins knowing that they are doing evil. You ask: When he was in Egypt did he not preach Tawheed in its entire form? Yes. As stated before all the prophets and messengers preached the concept of Tawheed (i.e. Unity of God). You ask: At this time where Israelies believers? The Children of Israel knew of God and His previous messages. If they were "believers" then they believed in the remnants of God's messages of the past prophets. The prophet Moses came to reestablish God's religion for them to believe in and follow. You ask: Also after recieving Thorath when Musa (Allah's Mercy upon him) went to his people when he saw them idol worshipping he got angry with Haroon (Allah's Mercy upon him), but he replied that he did not say anything against idol worshipping as he was afraid of disunity.7:150. The Qur'an says: When Moses came back to his people, angry and grieved, he said: "Evil it is that ye have done in my place in my absence: did ye make haste to bring on the judgment of your Lord?" He put down the tablets, seized his brother by (the hair of) his head, and dragged him to him. Aaron said: "Son of my mother! the people did indeed reckon me as naught, and went near to slaying me! Make not the enemies rejoice over my misfortune, nor count thou me amongst the people of sin." - Al `A`raf 7:150 In reading the verse it should be apparent that you have misunderstood the verse's meaning. There is no talk of unity. Rather, the prophet Haroon did not want to be lumped up with the people who committed the evil of worshipping the calf. Moses had just accused him and he was trying to clear himself of being involved in partaking or allowing sin. You ask: Does that mean unity is more important than Tawheed? Having better comprehended that the verse has nothing to do with unity amongst people it should be clear that this has nothing to do with the concept of Tawheed . I hope I have clarified the issue. God knows best. Ronnie Hassan August 28, 2005
