Title: Taking of Clothes While taking a Bath or While Sleeping Question: When we take bath in the bathroom, can we take all our clothes of? When we sleep in the night, can we take our clothes of? Answer: There is no harm in taking all of one's clothes of while taking a bath in a private bathroom [1] . However, as far as taking one's clothes of while sleeping is concerned, even though the Shari`ah has not given any specific directives in this regard, yet I do not feel inclined toward it. A person may wear lose and comfortable clothes, while retiring for bed, but completely uncovering one's body in bed, even if sleeping alone, is something against my concept of Hayaa [2] . A Muslim should always try to keep the remembrance of God alive in his mind. Obviously, while striving to keep God's remembrance alive in my mind, I would try my best to avoid being involved in any such thing, which is against my concept of piety and Godliness. It is to teach us to keep the remembrance of God alive in our minds, at all times, that the Prophet (pbuh) has taught us various supplications for different occasions. Included in these supplications are also those, which the Prophet (pbuh) taught us to recite at the time of retiring for bed at night. These supplications, on the one hand, are a prayer to be blessed with God's company and attention even while one is asleep; and on the other, are a reminder of one's death and his subsequent meeting with God. In my mind, whoever truly wants to achieve the closeness of God, would first of all, like to be in a mental, physical and spiritual state, which is in accordance with his standards of piety and Godliness. A state of nudity, in my mind, is not consonant with the aspired state of piety and Godliness. September 19, 2000 [1] Over here, 'private bathroom' has been used to contrast it from community bathrooms. [2] Over here, Hayaa refers to the inclination toward shamefulness (at doing what one feels to be wrong) and modesty. This feeling of shame and modesty is not only in relation to our fellow human beings, but also toward oneself as well as toward God.
