Ruling on Philosophy
Question
Title: Ruling on Philosophy Question: Some Muslim Scholars claim that Philosophy like music is against Shariah and Muslim students should not study these subjects. So far non of the Muslim organizations or groups of Muslim Scholars have passed any final verdict (fatwa) against this subject , I do not understand on what basis do these Scholars claim that Philosophy is against Shariah? I asked you a similar kind of question on Philosophy before but I am sorry to say I was not satisfied with your reply because you answered very briefly in one sentence. I would like you to present an elaborate answer on this issue in order to clear my concept. I would really appreciate If you do that. Regards Answer: Unfortunately there is not much one can elaborate on regarding this issue except to say that there is no basis to claim that philosophy or the study of philosophy is against the Shari'ah (i.e. Islamic Law). Much like music, philosophy is seen as a waste of time that does nothing for the person indulging in it. We would actually agree, with both opinions, if the music or the philosophy consisted of elements that were against Islam or the spirit of Islam. However, neither activity is inherently evil and therefore cannot be deemed against the Shari'ah. The objections to philosophy are pretty much the same for music, hence it would only be a repetition of an argument already made previously if one were to go into this subject. If you would like further details then an opinion with sources should be presented and from there we can give our thoughts on it. I hope I have clarified the issue. God knows best.
