Question

Title: Rubbing on socks during Wudu Question: As for rubing on socks for Wozoo: Is there any support for allowance of this act in Quran? There is a hadith narrated from Ali (RA) who says this Hokm was abrogated by the verse of Wozoo in Sura of Maedeh. Also there is a hadith by Ayesha (RA) that says I rather cut my feet than rubing on them. Are the two above ahadith fabricated? Regards Abdullah Rahim United Kingdom Answer: If a person has worn his socks while in a state of Wudu and continues to wear them when renewing his wudu , then as an allowance granted by the Shari`ah , the person may rub his slightly wet hands over his socks, rather than washing his feet. This allowance is transmitted through the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh), just as the things which break wudu are transmitted through the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh) [1] . Keeping the foregoing explanation in perspective, it seems that the referred narratives are incorrectly ascribed to the two respected personalities. I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad August 20, 2002 [1] According to my revised opinion, the allowance of wiping over socks - if one has worn these socks in a state of ablution - and the allowance of wiping over imamah or some other head covering should, in fact, not be considered as a Sunnah of the Prophet, but should be seen as the Prophet's extension of the relief provided by the Qur'an by allowing tayammum (i.e., dry ablution) in place of wudu , under certain conditions.
