Question

Me and husband had the nikkah a year ago while we were in London. Now we are going to have a ceremony in India where our parents want to perform the Nikkah again as most of our relatives doesnt know about it. My question is do we have to set the same Haq Mehr as we used in the previous marriage or it can be different??

Answer

If you decide to go forward with the new Nikkah (marriage contract) any revised portion will take effect and be legally binding in accordance to the Shari'ah (Islamic Law). As such, you do not have change any part of the Nikkah and just go through the motions or you may modify part of it adhere to the amendments made. I hope this helps. God knows best.
