Question

Title: Regarding Will about the Place of One's Burial Question: What is the Islamic way of handling/transporting the dead body of a Muslim who died hundreds/thousands of miles away? For example if I die in the United States of America, what would be the Islamic way of transportation of [the] dead body. My understanding is that, there is no concept of burial in the native city, wherever a person dies, he needs to be buried as soon as possible. Answer: Islam does not give us any specific guidelines regarding where a person should be buried. There is no prohibition in desiring to be buried in one's hometown, and in such a case, any mode of transportation may be opted for. But I do agree with you that rather than make a hassle about burials it would be preferable that a person be buried at the place of his death. Especially, if one is living at the place with all his near and dear ones. Obviously, if one is living away from one's family and friends, then it would only be a natural desire of all his loved one's to bury him in the most appropriate manner and to pay him their final respects and even to see him one last time before he is buried. I personally feel that in such a case, it would be more desirable to take the body to one's homeland. 7 th May 1999
