Regarding War during Ramadan
Question
Title: Regarding War during Ramadan Question: While viewing a television show recently, I learned of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) waging war during the month of Ramadan . I understand this is not accepted in Islam and I want to know the circumstances that led the prophet to act in such a manner. A certain television show was ridiculing Muslims on this pretense and I want to write to that station but I want my facts to be straight before I do. I would greatly appreciate your help in this matter. Thank you in advance. Zarlasht Ahmad Answer: There are certain months in the Islamic calendar during which war is considered to be prohibited. These months are Dhul Qa`dah (the eleventh month), Dhul Hajj (the twelfth month), Muharram (the first month) and Rajab (the seventh month). Ramadan was never considered to be a month in which war was prohibited. Thus, it is quite well known that the Battle of Bad'r was fought during the month of Ramadan . According to Ibn Ishaq's "Al-Seerah", the battle was fought on the 17 th of Ramadan, which happened to be a Friday. I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad October 26, 2001
