Regarding Using Perquisites
Question
Title: Regarding Using Perquisites Question: One of my friends asked this question: He is working at a company which provides 150 liters of car fuel as part of the salary package. Since his traveling is limited, 150 liters sometimes proves to be excessive for his usage. He would like to know if he can use this fuel in his personal car at home or give it to someone because otherwise he would waste it as part of his monthly salary package. I would like to know your opinion on this from Shari`ah perspective. Jazak Allah Khairan . Wassalam O Alaikum Wa Rehmatullah Atif Sajid United States of America Answer: Firstly, I want to applaud you and your friend for fine tuning your moral sensitivities and heeding any situation that could potentially place either of you in a state of transgression. Your consideration of the issue is exactly the moral character Islam wants to develop within all of us. Secondly, I believe the answer lies in your question. If the fuel is part of your friend's salary package then it is totally up him to do with it as he pleases. It seems to me, from the question, that part of his pay or compensation for his services performed is the 150 liters of fuel. However, if the fuel is sanctioned for only work related travels then I would suggest that he use that fuel for those purposes only. If that is the case and he feels that they give him too much then he may ask them to decrease the amount they provide him with. Another solution, if the fuel is for company use only, is to ask permission to use the remaining fuel for personal use. If given permission then he may do whatever he likes with it. Finally, the fuel is just as much of a payment as is his salary. If he so chooses to give part of his salary (including the fuel) to charity or spend it all on himself then that is his privilege in which his company has afforded him with. I hope I have clarified the issue God knows best Ronnie Hassan March 4, 2003
