Regarding the Death & Crucifixion of Jesus (pbuh)...
Question
Title: Regarding the Death & Crucifixion of Jesus (pbuh)... Question: According to Christianity Jesus died on the cross, was later resurrected and then God raised him to heaven. In Qur'an it is said in Surah An-Nisaa 4: 57: And their saying: Surely we have killed the Messiah, Isa son of Marium, the apostle of Allah; and they did not kill him nor did they crucify him, but it appeared to them so and most surely those who differ therein are only in a doubt about it; they have no knowledge respecting it, but only follow a conjecture, and they killed him not for sure. If we look at the words from the God's point of view, it completely matches the Christian version of first Jesus death and later resurrection. People present there certainly believed that Jesus (pbuh) was dead because he had no life left in him. Although he was lifeless (dead) in the eyes of the people present there; but not for God. God being an omnipotent knew that I would give him the life again and raised him to Me later. Why can't we see this verse from this angle? Please clarify. Thanks. Jazzakallah khairun Nauman Ilyas Pakistan Answer: Had the verse only stated that the Jews did not 'kill' Jesus, then your explanation could have been plausible. However, the words 'nor did they crucify him' in the referred verse, has removed all chances of accepting the Christian view of the incident. The inclusion of the words 'nor did they crucify him', immediately after the words 'they did not kill him' clearly implies that the Qur'an is not only refuting Jesus' (pbuh) death at the hands of the Jews, but is also negating the very incidence of Jesus' crucifixion at the hands of his enemies. It is because of the foregoing reason that, in my opinion, the Christian view point and the Qur'anic stipulations are mutually exclusive and neither of two can be interpreted in a way that would accommodate the other. I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad November 26, 2002
