Possible Evidence for Plurality of the Deity
Question
Title: Possible Evidence for Plurality of the Deity Question: A non-Muslim friend of mine asked me why do you believe in the existence of ONE GOD only. His argument is that it is possible for there to be other gods of universes beyond our own. He is sort of thinking of this universe as a subset of a larger set where other universes can exist as well. This obviously relies on the idea of 'probability' and is not very solid. How can I explain to him the hollowness of this argument. I personally take Allah's own shahadah as the end of discussion on this topic. The Quran is a living proof of Allah's position as the Creator and master of this universe, His power, perfection and independence. Allah does not need us. Therefore, whatever He tells us in His perfect knowledge has to be true. He does not have to lie to anyone. That's how I look at it. Can you please give me some advice on how to answer this question? Omir Adhia Canada Answer: We - humans - take decisions on our present information rather than on any possible information that we may be exposed to in a possible future. The idea that there may exist information, which proves the plurality of deity is no ground, under the present circumstances to ascribe to polytheism. It should be noted that even the Qur'an has prompted us to believe in whatever is based on solid evidence, rather than any probable evidence. The Qur'an has even directed the Prophet (pbuh) to declare that if the idea of God having a son were based on solid evidence, then even the Prophet (pbuh) would not refrain from worshiping that son ( Al-Zukhruf 43: 81). As you have yourself correctly stated, the argument presented is no argument at all. I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad January 5, 2003
