Question

Title: Permissibility of Offering Taraweeh Prayers Behind an Imam on TV or Radio Question: Would you please clarify whether or not it is permissible to offer taraweeh behind an imam in the tv/radio. Thank you. Answer: First, the best way for reading the so called prayer of Taraweeh is to do it individually and preferably between midnight and into the early morning hours before Fajr (this does not mean that reading in in congregation is not correct). The Taraweeh prayer is (originally) nothing but the night ( Tahajjud ) prayer. Please read the following for more clarification on this: Regarding Taraweeh & Tahajjud Prayers Reading from the Qur'an during Taraweeh Prayers Second, one of the main points of doing prayer in congregation is for Muslims to gather in one place, see each other, ask about each other and pray together under one roof to materialise the unity and steadfastness of Muslims as an Ummah and to please their Lord by showing their unity in worshiping him. Reading a prayer behind an Imam on TV simply lacks the very essence of being in a congregational prayer and should be avoided. Abdullah Rahim September 20, 2007
