Question

Nudity in the Society... I live in a society where there is a lot of nudity... so what I'm saying is that should I look at it as something that just exists in the society (be careless towards it) or should I avoid it, which seems impossible because its almost everywhere. A Canadian Pakistani Reply It should be remembered that according to the Qur'an, our ultimate success in the hereafter depends on our adherence to and furtherance of the basic values that are entailed in our nature and reminded to us through the revelations from God. These values, among others, include the value of Hayaa [1] . The prevalence of nudity in a society, as should be quite apparent, has a negative effect on our inherent value of Hayaa , from the perspective of the individual as well as the society. However, it should be clearly understood that under all circumstances it is ultimately the individual who is responsible for his/her actions as well as his/her spiritual and moral purification. Thus, even if negative values have become prevalent in the society, it is ultimately the individual who, with a view to cleansing his mind, body and soul, has to keep himself/herself clear as far as possible, of all the wrong that is in vogue. In view of the above explanation, and in view of the directive of the Qur'an regarding interaction between men and women, I would advise you to: under no circumstances should you yourself indulge or take part in any form of activity that may have a negative effect on your mind, body and/or soul. avoid all such circumstances, as far as possible, which are likely to have a negative effect on your spiritual and moral cleansing; even when faced with such circumstances, you must adhere to the directive of the Qur'an and lower your gaze, trying to keep your mind clear of sexual thoughts; I would also like to add here that for your ultimate and everlasting success, your first and foremost priority in the life of this world should be to provide yourself the environment which would help and support your efforts of cleansing your mind, body and soul. Therefore, if at any time you realize that the environment has a negative effect on your moral and spiritual personality, you should try to change your environment and find a place that would provide you with an environment that is more congenial and supportive to cleansing and purifying your mind, body and soul and thus helping you achieve the everlasting bliss of the hereafter. I hope this helps. In case any aspect of your question remains unanswered or inadequately answered, please feel free in writing back to me at your own convenience. May the Almighty guide us all to the path of His liking. My fondest regards to you and those around you. The Learner [1] Hayaa is one of the basic values that Islam wants to inculcate among its adherents. Due to the lack of an accurate synonymous in the English language, I have used the Arabic word, which, over here, implies 'the suppression of sexual interaction within certain limits and the avoidance of instigating sexual attraction or being instigated by a sexual attraction beyond those limits".
