Question

Title: Music Question: I have gone through your site about music. But there are still some points to be cleared. If Quran does not make it haram how can we make it halaal? There is a hadith that if halaal/haraam is not clear then we should avoid doing doubtful things. Taqwa means caution. Why take the risk. One of the signs of day of judgement is that musical instruments and female singers will increase. So how can we say music is allowed even if it is Islamic? Khalid Jamil Pakistan Answer: I am afraid I do not believe that the issue of music is doubtful in any sense of the word. You have acknowledged the fact that the Holy Qur'an delivers no positive or negative verdict regarding this issue. It is only the Hadith literature from where we come to know certain disapproving sentences of our dear Prophet (pbuh). The truth of the matter is that if you interpret these sayings ascribed to the Prophet (pbuh) keeping in perspective their specific context you will be compelled to conclude that the Prophet (pbuh) showed disapproval of that music and other incidentals, which divest a believer of his inner purity and derive him away from his Lord. Hence, the case stands proven beyond any shadow of doubt. I therefore do not believe that the issue of music is doubtful in any sense. You say: Taqwa means caution. Why take the risk. Obviously, I would also like all the believers to be very careful while selecting what music they may choose to enjoy. I fully acknowledge the fact that sometimes carelessness in this matter leads the listener to excessiveness and as a result he, who once was a practicing believer, finds himself compelled to leave his obligatory prayer by being absorbed unnecessarily in some sort of music he has fallen in love with. The other dangerous thing is that a bad selection may also lead the listener to fantasy involving immoral visualization. Obviously, the prudent and right approach in this case would be to avoid the situation and avoid listening to such base and sordid songs again. However, this whole thing is to be decided by the individual. No general verdict should be delivered by us humans in this regard - may God forgive us - by assuming the position of the Almighty - the Law Maker. You comment: One of the signs of day of judgment is that musical instruments and female singers will increase. You are kindly requested to please provide the complete reference of the said narrative.
