Marriage with the Sister of one's Lover
Question
Title: Marriage with the Sister of one's Lover Question: I have a very critical problem, which I want to ask you in confidence. Actually I had some sexual relations with my sister-in-law (wife's sister). We were in love before the marriage but, unfortunately, I got married with the other one. Now I want to ask that is their any possibility that I get married with my sister-in-law in the presence of my current wife, as they both are real sisters? And I also want to know that after the sexual relations what about my married life. Is my wife Halaal [1] to me or not? or what else? Answer: The Qur'an prohibits marriage with two sisters, at the same time . We all know that extra-marital sexual relations are strictly prohibited in Islam. Islam considers such an act a great sin and a crime against the whole society. It is due to this reason that fornication is the only crime, which according to the Qur'an should be punished in public. According to Surah Al-Furqan fornication, along with Shirk (associating partners with Allah) and murder, is a crime, which shall follow everlasting punishment in hellfire. In view of these facts, the gravity of your act should be obvious. The only solace now is in true repentance with a sincere heart. True repentance, even after these three big sins, mentioned in Surah Al-Furqan , not only does away with the consequences of these sins but in such a situation God gives us the glad tidings that He, with His infinite mercy replaces these deadly sins with good deeds. May God grant us the chance to truly repent for our sins, before our time is over. As far as the effect of the stated pre-marital relation with your sister-in-law is concerned, it would have no effect on your marriage, unless you were punished by the state and consequently your marriage would have been repealed (which according to the Qur'an is a part of the punishment of fornication) [2] . Under the present circumstances, on the contrary, there would be no effect on your marriage. 25 th July 1999 [1] i.e. 'lawful' or 'permitted'. [2] According to Al-Noor 24: 3.
