Janazah Prayer in Absentia
Question
Janazah Prayer in Absentia... Is there any room for " Janazah prayer in Absentia" in Islam, while: Janazah prayer has not been offered at the death place before burial. Janazah prayer has been offered by some Muslims but loved-ones want to offer at different place (for example overseas). Wassalam! Zulfiqar, Australia Reply Janazah prayer is primarily a part of the burial rites as entailed in the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh). It is basically a prayer for the salvation and forgiveness of the deceased, as a last step before his burial. According to the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh), Janazah prayer is a right of a dead Muslim on his living brethren. In view of this fact, if a person dies in a land in which no one is present to offer his Janazah or it is not known whether his Janazah prayer was offered or not, it may then be offered in absentia by his relatives, friends and loved ones. However, if it is known that the Janazah prayer was offered before his burial, it would then, in my opinion, be more preferable to offer informal supplications for the forgiveness of our brother, rather than offering formal Janazah prayers in absentia. Nevertheless, even in such circumstances, Janazah prayers in absentia cannot be considered as disallowed. I hope this helps. Regards, The Learner Home Page
