Is Seafood permissible for Consumption?
Question
Thank you for your response. I understand that it is not worth one's time to worry about other people's status with God. It's just that I've lived in various parts of the world and have made friends with atheists, agnostics, Shintos, Christians, Jews, Muslims (and many others) and the thought that any one of them should burn for an eternity in the Hereafter simply because they failed to undergo the appropriate religious rituals shakes me to my very core. Because of my limited comprehension, I may be terribly confused about justice. Nonetheless, as you have clarified, God will make the best decision according to His absolute and perfect Justice. Now, to my question: I am fully aware that Muslims are prohibited from eating any meat, which did not have God's name pronounced on it at the time of slaughter (6:121). As a student in America, I therefore refrain from eating any beef, chicken, lamb, goat meat. My understanding has always been that this rule applies solely to animals that can be slaughtered with a knife and not marine animals such as fish, shrimp, squid, crab, lobster etc. I was wondering if 6:121 applies to seafood as well and if so whether it applies only to certain types of seafood and not others. Thank you again for all your assistance. May Allah Almighty reward you for your work in His way. Best wishes, Omar
Answer
All the rules relating to slaughter, including pronouncing God's name at the time of the slaughter, are related specifically to animals, which are slaughtered. This rule does not apply upon animals, which are not slaughtered, including fish etc. You opinion, as I see it, is correct. Regards, Moiz Amjad October 11, 2001 Answer published by Moiz Amjad
