Is My Father Allowed to Refuse a Marriage Proposal to Me?
Question
Salam, I have a father who just looks at Education and Family and Nationality for him to be satisfied with a compatable partner for myself. I'm 25 and feel that I'm ready to settle down and want to start a family. I have found someone who has a good job, but doesn't have a University degree like myself and his parents are split up which will effect the approval of my father. He is Lebanese and I am Eygptian. But I live in a place where there is barely any muslim brothers to choose from. Is it haram for my father to decline his marriage proposal towards me?
Answer
Islam does not require parental consent for a marriage to proceed. As you mentioned, you are a woman of proper age and of sound mind ready to wed whom you desire. Being that you have that freedom there is something to say for having someone who looks out for your best interest. It may be that no one can be in that role than your father. There is no doubt that his high expectations are an expression of his love and his desire for the best for you. One cannot ignore the experience and knowledge that parents possess. In fact, it is not far-fetched that one consider the social, educational and spiritual levels of a potential couple. Marriage has its idiosyncrasies and vast differences may pose additional challenges to it. I am not suggesting that people marry within certain classifications but it may benefit the future spouses to head off an issues that may arise. Lastly, your father has no religious rank to sanction or forbid your union with a proper suitor. So, it is not haram (in this context, a violation of religious rules) to refuse the person you desire to marry but he also cannot stop you on any religious ground. It may be wise that you give it some time and allow your father to get to know this person as this may help them get to know each other and for your father to ease up on his decision. I hope this helps. God knows best. Answer published by Ronnie Hassan
