Is a Monogamous Family Preferred?
Question
Title: Is a Monogamous Family Preferred? Question: Does Islam prefer for a man to marry with only one woman. I mean what is the ideal situation according to Islamic point of view. Thanks Fakhar Italy Answer: I would agree with the contention that even though polygamy has generally been a part of most, if not all, of the traditional societies, yet a monogamous family seems to be more in keeping with the natural emotional inclinations of the male and the female forming that family. This contention is also supported by the fact that the family of Adam and Eve (pbut), which was the direct creation of God and was formed exactly according to the unblemished nature of men and women, consisted only of one man and one woman. Thus, in my opinion, even though Islam does not hinder a person from taking more wives than one, yet it seems that the ideal situation, under normal circumstances, would indeed be to form a family through one man and one woman only. I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad September 3, 2001
