Illegal Residential Status and Muslim Marriage
Question
Title: Illegal Residential Status and Muslim Marriage Question: Salaam Alaikum My question is about Muslim marriage for illegal people. I recently converted to Islam and now I am engaged with a Muslim man, but due to my status in this country I can not get married legally, even though I want to get married in a Muslim way. I have been looking a Mosque to get married but here in Los Angeles, California to do it in a Mosque you must be legally married first. How I can get married in Islam if I am illegal? How can I get married in Allah's law if I don't have papers? Is there any place in Los Angeles, CA, USA where Muslims can get married only in a religious way? We don't know what to do. Thank you so much. Best regards, Answer: I would suggest that you seek advice of a legal advisor rather than a student of Islam, like myself. You may write to me about the essential requirements that should be fulfilled for a marriage to be recognized in the Shari `ah . However, I cannot be of much help in finding loopholes and ways of getting your marriage recognized in a particular region of the world. Such help should, on the contrary, be sought from a legal expert, who is fully aware of the socio-legal requirements of your area of residence. Please accept my apologies for not being able to help you. Regards August 23, 2001
