How do we Clean Ourselves?
Question
How is istinjah performed? What is the most preferred method of the Prophet? When answering this question keep in mind the different types of bathrooms (I'm not sure if that makes a difference, mine is a typical American one). If you could provide as much detail (step by step) it would help. Is there a prescribed way to cleanse one's self after movement of the bowels? Is there a particular way to wipe and wash? Please explain if there is. How is ghusl performed? Everyone explains this in the general rather than be specific as they do when describing wudu . If you would please describe the correct method in as much detail as you can provide. If a person performs ghusl do they have to perform wudu after that? Ronnie USA
Answer
Istinjah is not a ritual for which a specific method or routine were prescribed. On the contrary, Istinjah simply implies washing the related parts after defecation or urination. This practice of cleaning after defecation or urination is prescribed by the Shari`ah as being a part of man's nature of cleanness. From the above, it should be clear that there is no specific method or utensil prescribed for cleaning after relieving oneself. One may simply wash one's related parts thoroughly after defecation and urination. Nevertheless, if water is not available or if water cannot be used for any reason, then one may simply use any other drying and/or scrubbing element to clean oneself. During the Prophet's times, the more commonly used element as a substitute for water was generally pebbles of dry earth. During the present times, tissue paper may also be used under such circumstances. For your question regarding the ritual bath, please refer to my earlier responses on the topic, which you may find in the sub-category titled ' The Meaning & Method of Ghusl '. I hope this helps.
