Frequency of Changing Clothes
Question
Title: Frequency of Changing Clothes Question: How often should we change clothes? How often did our Prophet (mpbuh) change clothes usually? Although a take a bath everyday, my father forces me to change clothes twice a day! I often get a scolding if i wear the same clothes in the morning that i was wearing the last evening. Is it NECESSARY or ADVISABLE in Islam to change clothes so often? What does Islam says about it? Haris Zia Pakistan Answer: Even though Islam strongly promotes the spirit of cleanness, yet how often should one change one's clothes, largely depends on one's social traditions, the environment and one's economic and social status and tastes. Islam has neither directed people to change their clothes with a particular frequency nor has prohibited them from doing so. However, Islam does strongly prohibit extravagance and pretentious attitude. In view of the foregoing, it should be clear that, according the directives of Islam, it is neither advisable nor necessary for you to change your clothes twice or thrice during a day. Nevertheless, on the other hand, because Islam does not prohibit you from doing so, you may do so with the intention of making your father happy. We must remember that whatever we do, which is within the allowable limits of Islam, for the pleasure and goodwill of our parents, we shall insha'Allah be rewarded for it during the Hereafter. I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad May 13, 2002
