Clarification Sought With reference to your question, please ask your Christian friend to give the reference of the verse, in which the Christ is narrated to have said: "It is finished". The Clarification Here is the Quote regarding the ending of the message with Christ. John 19:30 30 When he had received the drink, Jesus said, "It is finished." With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. The NT reference to "It is finished" is John chpt 19:30. (read verses 28-30 ---The Jewish NT version uses the word accomplished, in both those verses). P. Shah Jahan Reply The referred verse with its two preceding verses reads as: After this, when Jesus knew that all was now finished, he said (in order to fulfill the scripture), "I am thirsty." A jar full of sour wine was standing there. So they put a sponge full of the wine on a branch of hyssop and held it to his mouth. When Jesus had received the wine, he said, "It is finished." The he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. I really do not understand how, in the above context, the words "It is finished" could be taken to imply that the 'series of prophets is finished'. If interpreted in the light of the context of the referred verse, the verse simply seems to imply that the "time ordained for Jesus' ministry is finished", in other words, it is time for Jesus to leave the world. I am sure, if your Christian friend is persistent to take the word "It" to imply 'the series of prophets' he would have a sound basis to do so. I would, therefore, suggest that you ask your friend what in the words and the context of the referred verse, guides him to interpret that the word 'It' implies 'prophets'. I really do not see anything to agree with the referred opinion. I hope this helps 24 th May 2000 Answer published by Moiz Amjad
