Title: Does Qur'an Contradict regarding the Fate of Jesus (as)? Question: The following is an excerpt from an article a former Muslim who converted to Christianity wrote. Till now, I was not aware of this ayah in Qur'an, due to my lack of knowledge. I would appreciate any help you can provide me to help understand the ayah . The article is very lengthy, and so I took the liberty of pulling out this excerpt for you: The Quran asserts that God put somebody who looked like Him on the cross in the place of Jesus. Now my Muslim friends, God is not in the business of fraud, for if he had wanted to deliver Jesus from the cross, He could have done it miraculously without having to deceive and put Jesus' likeness on someone else. This Quranic error is too blatant, and proves that the Quran has no divine origin. What is more, the Quran is self-contradicting, for while it claims that the Jews did not really kill Jesus it also affirms very distinctly the reality of Jesus' death in the sura of the family of Imran 3:47/54 - 48/55 as it states: "When God said: "OH JESUS, I SHALL CAUSE YOU TO DIE, AND THEN I SHALL RAISE YOU UP TO ME."" My Muslim friend, my goal is not here to proselytize you, but to... The above person is obviously trying to use the above ayah to contradict the ayah in Surah Maryam . His entire article appears here: http://hometown.aol.com/formermuslim/ I apologize if this question was posted previously; simply email me the link so I can share in the knowledge you are giving to others. Jezakullah for your time; Assalaamo Alaikum Murtuza Salahuddin Answer: The basic premise of the article requires to be established. The very idea that 'the Qur'an asserts that God put somebody who looked like Him on the cross in the place of Jesus' is not correct. The Qur'an does not assert the above. On the contrary, the Qur'an only says that the Jews neither killed nor crucified Jesus (pbuh), but the matter was actually rendered into confusion for them. The Qur'an does not give any details of how the matter was rendered into confusion for the rejecters of the prophet. The writer's contention is not mentioned in the Qur'an. However, it is generally accepted to be the case by a number of Muslim commentators. Thus, even if the writer's stated objection carries any weight, it refutes the explanation of the incident as held by a number of Muslim commentators. The stated objection is neither based on nor effects the Qur'an. I hope this helps. Regards, Moiz Amjad October 24, 2001
