Divorce Upon Parent's Request
Question
Should we obey our parents if they ask one to divorce a spouse because of disagreements between the in-laws?
Answer
Parents are to be given the utmost respect. They should be honored and loved with every bit of sincerity in one's heart. Obeying our parents is a virtue; it brings out the goodness within us and the qualities of rightness. For the most part parents have our best interest in mind. They advise us and guide us to what they think is the most correct path to take. However, our parents are human and by that very nature are fallible. Unfortunately, even with all their love and wisdom, they sometimes slip up and either have unrealistic expectations or want us to do something that they think is in our best interest but truly may not be. Whatever the case is you may want try to make things work out with all the parties involved, if possible. Nonetheless, you have no religious obligation to obey your parent's suggestions regarding marriage and divorce. Everyone should take a step back and make decisions in all righteousness. This means that grudges and biases should be put aside while honesty, common sense and balanced minds should be employed. I hope I have clarified the issue. God knows best.
