Can We Attend A Christian Mass for a Socially Justifiable Cause?
Question
Title: Can We Attend A Christian Mass for a Socially Justifiable Cause? Question: Is it haraam to attend (but not participate) in a Christian mass (my situation being a mass given in support of a charity)? Masha'Allah if you can reply asap, and with Qur'an and Hadith etc. Answer: Declaring something Haraam (prohibited) is the authority only of the prophet of God. No one can declare anything Haraam in the absence of a clear directive from the Book of God. If a clear directive is not present in any case, then the most that a scholar can say is that a particular thing or concept is desirable or undesirable. As far as attending a Christian mass is concerned, there is no clear directive that I know of which prohibits it. Therefore, it is not a case of Haraam (prohibition). It is actually a case of deciding its desirability or undesirability, and in so doing there may arise a difference of opinion between two or more scholars. In my opinion, attending a Christian mass for a good purpose - which may extend from social or charity work, understanding and studying Christian doctrines and practices or attending the marriage ceremony or a funeral of a Christian friend - is not only not prohibited, but can sometimes be very desirable. Please excuse my not giving any references from the Qur'an and/or Hadith , but as I have stated earlier, the issue has not been discussed in the Qur'an and Hadith . 14 th February 1999
