Can I Marry a Muslim Without Converting to Islam?
Question
Hello... I am a Christian woman who is divorced more than 3 years and I have 2 children from that marriage. If I wish to marry a Muslim man, can I still keep my Christian faith and still send my children to Christian schools. Can I still take my children to church? Do I have to change my religion and become a Muslim? Can I practice both religions? In other words can I still remain a Christian for my children, as this is our way. Can I follow a Muslim husband in Islamic way follow Islamic beliefs as well as Christian? I hope this is not too confusing, for you to answer me. But I would really like to know answers, as I do like a Muslim man very much. Thank you. Eagerly awaiting your reply
Answer
A Muslim man has been expressly allowed by the Qur'an to take a Christian wife in marriage ( Al-Maaidah ). This obviously implies that you can marry a Muslim man without converting to Islam. However, following both Islam and Christianity, at the same time, would probably not be possible due to some of the major differences that exist between the two sets of beliefs, especially regarding the person of the Christ (pbuh). I would suggest that rather than try to keep yourself afloat on two separate boats, you should try to understand the teachings of the two religions and opt for the one, which you understand to be closer to the truth. It should be remembered that the choice of our religion should not be based on our 'past' commitments regarding the determination of our 'ways', but on our 'present' understanding and appreciation of what the truth is. Christianity and Islam are two separate points of views regarding our eternal salvation. A choice based on wrong criteria, in the selection of religion, thus can translate into our eternal doom. We may, indeed, be forgiven for our mistakes in the selection of our religion, provided, at least, that we had honestly searched for the truth. Thus, even though you are allowed to marry a Muslim, without converting to Islam, yet my personal advise to you would be to keep your eyes, ears and heart open to accept any and every truth that comes your way. The same, obviously, goes for your (prospective) husband and children as well. 6 th June 2000 Answer published by Moiz Amjad
