Question

Title: Can Adultery be Forgiven? Question: Is there forgiveness for adultery through the concept of " taubah "? If a woman who has committed adultery continues to live with her husband who loves her too, can that woman ever be fogiven by God if the she seeks God's forgiveness? Answer: The Qur'an gives the glad tiding of forgiveness for all sins if sinner is truly repentant and sincerely resolves to correct his behavior. In this connection, the Qur'an has specifically mentioned three crimes - including fornication - which can doom the sinner to the everlasting torture of hellfire, except in the case where the sinner sincerely repents his doings and corrects his/her behavior. If the sinner is true in his repentance and sincere in his efforts for correction, then the Qur'an not only promises forgiveness but also the conversion of these sins into good deeds. Al-Furqaan 25: 68 - 70 declares: And [the Godly are] those who do not call upon any deity besides God and neither kill any soul that God has prohibited except for a just cause nor commit fornication. Whoever is guilty of this shall meet an evil [punishment]. On the Day of Judgment, his punishment shall keep on increasing and he shall abide in this [punishment] forever - disgraced. Except those that [truly] repent, believe and do good deeds, for they are the ones, for whom God shall convert their bad deeds to good ones. God is Forgiving, Ever Merciful. I hope this helps. 15 th October 1999
