Question

Title: Can a Woman Initiate a Proposal for Marriage? Question: I study in a co-ed institute and barely ever interact with boys. I know my limits. The problem is that there is one person whom I really appreciate for his religiosity, and occasionally, we have good discussions on Islam and Muslims. I get along really well with him, and we think alike on most issues. I am concerned whether it would be Islamically valid for me to let him know that a proposal would be accepted. Is it alright for a girl to do so, and if it is, how should I go about it? My parents will kill me if I tell them to approach. They will obviously take the wrong impression. Saadia Manzoor Pakistan Answer: I commend you on appreciating the young man's moral and religious character. It is a wise decision to want to be with someone who walks the path of God. Answering your question is quite simple; however, complications may enter the picture due to the cultural foundations and not Islamic ones. There is absolutely no prohibition in Islam for a woman to propose marriage to a man. There are no moral or ethical limitations from the Islamic perspective. You will find reassurance in the fact the Khadijah , the Prophet's wife, is reported to have proposed marriage to him and he accepted. Obviously, our best role model is the Prophet and in this we can find a most beautiful example. Unfortunately, I do not know the boy therefore it would be unwise of me to give advice on how to hint to him that you would like him to approach your parents. The reason I say this is because he may or may not react well to it. It might be a relief for him because he may not be sure if you like him on that level or he might be taken aback (in a negative way) and reject the idea and think you're too forward. I believe you are the best judge of how to approach him; you are privy to his personality. Maybe you can think of something clever, a friend might be able to help, but always be honest. Of course you should find out if he's even ready for marriage. Whatever you decide to do, have God in your heart and mind and pray to Him to help you make the right decision. I assure you that whatever the outcome is it will be in your best interest, insha'Allah . Finally, it is perfectly fine for you to approach the young man in a most honorable way and let him know your intentions by hinting or being flat out about it, depending upon the noble custom in your society. This is not prohibited by Islam. Make a wise decision based on the cultural environment that pervades in both your lives and ask God Almighty for help. Insha'Allah , whatever happens will be the best for the both of you. Whomever you marry, may your life be full of happiness and God's blessings showered upon you and your family. I wish you all the best in this world as well as in the Hereafter. I hope I have clarified the issue God knows best Ronnie Hassan February 14, 2003
