Bid`ah (Invention in Religion)
Question
Title: Bid`ah (Invention in Religion) Question: What is the Meaning of the term Bid`ah ? Answer: Bid`ah means invention in religion that is, any belief or practice which was not originally a part of religion but is included in it later. The Prophet (pbuh) has strictly warned against such practice as it distorts the true religion of Allah. However, this invention is only in terms of the religious injunctions. It has nothing to do with cultural and technological changes, which are not part of religion, as some people wrongly believe. For example wearing a dress according to one's own culture and not the one worn by the Prophet (pbuh), will not fall under Bid`ah , because the style of dress is not a part of religion. On the other hand, any religious practice, which is instituted without the authority of the Prophet (pbuh) shall be called a " Bid`ah ". An example of such a practice may be the ritualistic reading of the Qur'an - with the false concept of transferring its reward to the dead - at gatherings arranged on the third, the seventh, the tenth and the fortieth (etc.) day of a person's death. I hope this explanation answers your question. You can always get back if you are still unclear. However, this is only my opinion in this regard and I admit any chance of mistake in forming this opinion. I would be open to other points of view if based on stronger reasons. May Allah guide us all towards the right path. Note : This Question was answered by Mr.Amar Ellahi Lone
