Question

Title: Asking God through the Prophet (pbuh) Question: What is your opinion about prayers like these: Oh Allah do such and such for me for the sake of Muhammad Oh Allah I ask you in the name of Muhammad Oh Allah accept Muhammad's Shafaat for me , Oh Muhammad ask God to forgive me Oh Muhammad ask God to do such and such for me Thanks. Abu Yaheya United Kingdom Answer: As far as supplications to God are concerned, a few points need to be understood. The Quran has informed us that when calling on God no intermediary is necessary: "And your Lord says: 'Call on Me; I will answer your (Prayer)" ( Ghafir 40: 60) and "Why turn they not to Allah, and seek His forgiveness? For Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful." ( Al-Maaidah 5: 74) None of the supplications which the Quran or the Prophet has taught us include references to any intermediary, whether it be Muhammad (pbuh) or anyone else. An example is the following: Those who say, "Our Lord! avert from us the Wrath of Hell, for its Wrath is indeed an affliction grievous" ( Al-Furqaan 25: 65) The Quran has permitted us to ask others to pray for us : They said: O our father! ask for us forgiveness for our sins, for we were truly at fault ( Yusuf 12: 97) It needs to be understood that this refers to asking others to supplicate for us, not to the fact that we should ask God in the name of others in a supplication. Moiz Amjad writes in a previous response: "Because the Prophet (pbuh) has directed us to seek God's help and pray to Him directly, therefore, I do not consider seeking the intercession of pious people in prayers to be correct. The Qur'an tells us that God is closer to us than even our life veins and that He hears the call of suppliant heart, when it calls upon Him with sincerity and in submission. Why, then, would we need the intercession of others in delivering our requests and supplications to the Merciful, when, in fact, we have a direct and unhindered relationship with Him?"
