Adjusting Zaka'h Against Services Provided to the Needy
Question
Title: Adjusting Zaka'h Against Services Provided to the Needy Question: I have a coaching center. Many deserving students often come to me and ask for concessions. How will it be if I pay them discount and deduct that amount from the amount of Zaka'h I have to pay? Answer: If you provide your pupils with a fee-discount, on the basis of their weak financial background, there would be no harm in setting off such discounts against your Zaka'h payable. However, I request you that even if you have paid all the Zaka'h that you are liable to pay, do not refuse any truly deserving student a discount, if such can be afforded. Such a discount shall, insha'Allah , be considered a charity on your behalf and you shall, indeed, get its reward increased manifolds, on the Day when you will need it the most. These, indeed, are the kind of deeds that we should never consider to have earned enough. Never be miserly toward helping your brethren, just as your Lord has never been miserly toward you. May the Almighty guide us to the path of His liking. September 12, 2000
