Question

About Having Homosexual Friends... I've got some gay friends that were born in so-called Muslim families; i.e they've never been following Islam very much. And as a result of their unusual family circumstances (e.g. lack of a father figure) they've developed homosexual tendencies. They've confided in me that they want to turn straight and that they want to be closer to Islam. I am trying my best to help them out. But people have been telling me that Islam prohibits being friends with such people, likening me to Hadhrat Lut 's wife. Can you please tell me if I should or should not help them? When I'm trying to get them out of this? Isn't it right to help these people out? I'm studying to be a psychiatrist too, so please help me out. I've been having this guilty conscience that doesn't let me rest. Reply With the motives and the intentions that you have specified in your letter, it seems extremely ridiculous that anyone should compare your stated role with that of the wife of Lot (pbuh). Lot (pbuh)'s wife has been condemned by the Qur'an, not for trying to correct the Sodomites, but for being one of them in her rejection of God's messenger. Your motives and intentions, on the contrary, are quite commendable. I am sure, my dear brother, that whatever role you can play in curing your friends of the abhorrent ailment, you shall insha'Allah be rewarded manifolds for it. For this purpose, you will have to maintain a friendly and respectful relationship with them. Without such a healthy relationship, you cannot even hope to influence your friends in coming back to the path of God's nature. I would, therefore, strongly recommend that you not only maintain a healthy relationship with your friends and try to influence them into correcting their problem, but also pray to God for their correction and salvation. I assure you that the Lord would never reject your sincere prayers. Your reward, for whatever good that you do, shall be saved and multiplied for the time when you most need it.
