Ablution for Women Wearing Nail Polish

Question

Can women offer their prayers ( Sala'h ) with nail polish on their nails?

Answer

In my opinion, there is no harm if women offer their prayers with nail polish on their nails. The directive of the Shari`ah in this respect (related to ablution) is that when preparing for prayers, a person should wash his/her hands and arms. In my opinion, the directive of washing hands and arms is adequately carried out when the hands are properly washed, even if nail polish had been applied on the nails. This is clearly evidenced by the fact that in our common usage, when a woman washes her hand, even if she is wearing nail polish, we have no problems in submitting that her hands are washed. Thus, washing hands from over the nail polish in most of the cases should suffice for "washing hands" in ablution. However, if one wants to be extra careful, it may be advised that before applying nail polish on the nails, a woman may do her ablution or at least wash her hands thoroughly so that the nails (under the nail polish) are clean. Now after applying nail polish on clean nails, it will only be the coating of polish itself, which will be exposed and not the clean nails. This coating will automatically be cleaned every time ablution is done for prayers. I hope this explanation answers your question. You can always get back if you are still unclear. However, this is only my opinion in this regard and I admit any chance of mistake in forming this opinion. I would be open to other points of view if based on stronger reasons. May Allah guide us all towards the right path. Note: This response is written by This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
