A Muslim's Relationship With God
Question
Title: A Muslim's Relationship With God Question: You mentioned in your answer that "prayer is the most important aspect of our relationship with the Almighty". I know of many Muslims who would say that to have a relationship with God was impossible because God is transcendent and unknowable. Do you think it is possible to know and have a relationship with, God, and if so, how? Answer: I don't think you need to be in an equal level with one with whom you are having relationship unless we adopt a very specific meaning for the word 'relationship', which is not the case here. If you look around you, you should be able to identify the relationships between many entities without them being at the same level. Being transcendent and unknowable does not stop us from having relationship with God, in fact, it even makes it (i.e. the relationship) more attractive and desirable for us. It is not exaggeration if we say that in a way, the whole Qur'an is about our relationship with God. The Qur'an says: "[O Prophet,] say [to these believers,]: If you truly love God then follow me, for then will God love you and forgive you your sins" - Aal Imran 3:31 Is this not about the relationship between God and us? The only thing we need to appreciate is that no matter how good our relationship with God is, this is always going to be a relationship between Lord ( Rabb ) and servant ( Abd ). You wrote: "Do you think it is possible to know and have a relationship with, God, and if so, how?" I think I have answered the first part of the question. As for the second part of your question, I think you mean "how we can have a 'good' relationship with God". The answer is given in the Qur'an, including in the above verse. In other words, the whole Qur'an is an answer to this. Perhaps the best way to summarise it is to note those verses of the Qur'an that praise and give good news to those who purify themselves. God is the purest being. Surely to have a good relationship with "the purest being" we need to purify ourselves from any evil and (in a more advanced level) from any thing that can distract us from being a good servant ( Abd ) for our Lord. Prayer is one of the potentially most effective tools to remind ourselves about our relationship with God ( Tahaa 20:14) and to purify ourselves ( Al-Ankaboot 29:45). The more we purify ourselves, Insha'Allah , the better will be our relationship with God. Abdullah Rahim March 10, 2007
