A Further Clarification on Joining a Group for the Propagation of Islam...
Question
A Further Clarification on Joining a Group for the Propagation of Islam... Thanks for the response regarding my first question [1] . I would like to know your opinion on these particular aspects of the tablighi Jama`ah . Here in Malaysia, they have the 1/10 rule meaning that you have to go out (doing the tablighi [i.e. propagation] work outside your area) for 3 days in a month, 40 days for every years and 4 month at least once in a lifetime. I want to know the origin of this rule. Does it originate from Sunnah or Qur'an? Allah has said (what means): Whoever contends with and contradicts the Messenger after guidance has been clearly conveyed to him, and follows a path other than that of the Faithful Believers, We shall leave him in the Path he has chosen and land him in Hell, what an evil destination! [ Al Nisaa 4:115]. They also have this ziarah where they meet people to spread the teachings of tablighi [their group]. I'm really confused here. Although I believe that ziarah is a part of Sunnah but the tablighi objective is solely based on their group purposes only. They put more emphasis in making the people that they ziarah join the group rather than other aspects in Islam which I think are as equally important: Solat jama`ah , unity in Islam and etc. Third one is the way they promote ignorance in their teachings. They are more into sufism as I was told (I would like to know the truth of this allegation). I would really appreciate it if you keep this discussion private between the two of us. These are really sensitive matters and posting it in your website will hurt some of our brothers if they read it. I'm not saying that tablighi is wrong; they have certain aspects that should be praised. The way they sacrifice their time, energy and money for the purpose of da`wah and their lifestyle that closely resemble Sahabah . I'm just being extra careful. There is this Hadith , which I'm not so sure...saying that the prophet had spoken. he said that his ummat will be divided into 72/73 (correct me if I'm wrong) path and only one will be permitted to enter heaven. it's easy to say that choose the one that is based on Qur'an & Sunnah. The problem is all the groups claim the same things. I've put up some serious thinking about your opinion about the Jama`ah . I'm also taking your opinion into my consideration. Can you also please recommend me some books or website regarding of this issue? Thanks for your attention. Reply As far as the rule, which you have termed as the 'one-tenth's rule' is concerned, it is neither based on the Qur'an nor the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh). In fact, the very idea of propagating Islam outside one's own area is not based on either the Qur'an or the Sunnah . What you have termed as ' Ziarah ' is also not a directive of the Shari`ah , i.e. the Qur'an or the Sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh). The directive of the Shari`ah for the common Muslim, with regard to the work of propagation, is given in Surah Al-`Asr . Muslims, according to Surah Al-`Asr , are required to mutually teach as well as learn whatever they hold to be true, in a decent, sincere and wise manner. The words used by the Qur'an are " Tawaasee bi al-Haq ", which refers to mutual advise, mutual learning, mutual exhortation etc. This directive of the Shari`ah is to be complied with, in the normal course of one's life. One does not need to go out of one's own area to fulfill this directive. In fact, this directive can only be meaningfully complied with if one is working within one's own area and talking to people, whom he is well acquainted with. I really could not understand your third point. I would appreciate if rather than making a generalized statement, you would ask a specific question, as you have done in the first two points. I am posting this response on my web site, as this does not entail any criticism on any group of Muslims, as a whole. This response entails only my academic observations. I may be wrong in my findings. I would, therefore, like to post it, not with the intention of hurting the feelings of any group of Muslims, but with the hope that we may be guided to the truth. Obviously, after the Prophet (pbuh), the only way left for us to search for and get to the truth is through exchange of our ideas. It is only for this purpose that I am posting this response on the Web site. This would not only provide others the opportunity to read my response and agree with it, if they consider it to be correct, but would also provide me the opportunity to be exposed to, learn and consider the opinion of those, who consider my response to be incorrect. I assure you that if my opinion were proven to be incorrect, it would not hurt my feelings, in the least. The sole aim of all my work is to learn and teach the truth. Whatever it is. Why would others be any different? Regards, The Learner [1] The reference is to " Joining a Group for the Propagation of Islam... ".
