Title: The Qur'an on the Second Advent of Jesus (pbuh) Question/Comments: In your reply to this topic you said '..... the Qur'an has not even mentioned anything to imply the second advent of Hadhrat Isa (pbuh) at all'. I did some research on this interesting topic and found the following verse in the Quran in reference to this. Sura 43 (Zukhruf), verse 61 says the following: "And (Jesus) shall be A Sign of the Hour of Judgment..." Does this refer to the second coming of Hadhrat Isa. I would assume it does because the verse says 'shall', not 'was', which would otherwise refer to His first coming. The use of the word 'shall' obviously means still to come. So does this verse in fact foretell the second advent of Hadhrat Isa (pbuh)? Answer: The verse 61 of Surah Al-Zukhruf , which you have quoted in this regard, is actually not related to the second advent of Hazrat Esa (pbuh). Verses of the Qur'an should not be read in isolation and given any meaning. All the verses are in their respective contexts and can only be correctly understood if they are seen in their proper contexts. This verse also has its own specific context in which it is situated and hence its implication can only be understood correctly if you situate it in its context and then ponder over it. The Qur'an is addressing the Kufaar (the rejecters) who do not believe in the Day of Judgment. As an argument, for convincing them on this matter, here in this verse Allah gives the example of Hadhrat Esa (pbuh). The verse states that if the events of his life are considered closely, they leave no doubt about the knowledge and belief in the Day of Judgment. Hadhrat Esa (pbuh) has been presented as an unchallengeable sign of the Day of Judgment, in the sense that he was born only of a mother and had no father, and was given the miracle of resuscitating the dead. Thus, if Allah can create someone out of the normal course of events and give him the power to raise the dead, then how can anyone doubt His own ability of resurrecting the dead on the Day of Judgment? On the contrary, if the verse is taken to imply that the second advent of Jesus shall be a sign for the Day of Judgment, then obviously, it would be a sign for only those who witness that second advent. It would have no significance for the rejecters of the Prophet (pbuh), who are the first addressees of the referred verse and who within the verse are directed to believe in the life hereafter because of the stated argument. I hope this clears the matter. However, if you have any further confusion, please feel free in writing back to me. May Allah guide us all towards the right path.
