Topic Under Discussion Marrying Two Sisters Question Question from Pakistan I knew the short answer for my question. I want to know the details including some examples or quotes and the logic from Qur'an & Hadith if possible. Regards Answer As I had mentioned in my earlier response, Islam does not allow keeping two sisters in marriage at the same time. Under these circumstances, it is clear that, however, humane the motives or reasons may be, marrying a sister of one's wife shall stand prohibited in Islam. As far as the reason for this prohibition is concerned, it seems that all prohibitions mentioned in the Qur'an in this respect, are to develop the family structure. A little deliberation shall show that development of the family structure on sound footings requires that certain relations be kept clear of sexual attractions and marital relations. All relationships, which have been prohibited by the Qur'an , including taking two sisters in marriage at the same time, are for securing the family structure, which in turn, provides the basis for a sound society. In your initial letter, you had asked, "Is this [marriage] permissible to support her and her children?" The answer is "No". In such a situation, a person should try to support her and her children without entering a marriage contract. The case, in the light of the directive of the Qur'an , is quite similar to the one in which a person's real sister requires support. Obviously, in such a situation it is a person's moral obligation to support his sister who is in need and I am sure that no reasonable person, in such a situation, would consider marriage with her. By the same token, therefore, the only reasonable answer to your question can be: " No ". In short, no reason, however humane it may apparently seem, is big enough to justify ignoring the prohibition of the Qur'an relating to marrying two sisters at the same time. 21 st July 1999 Answer published by Moiz Amjad
