Judgment Day for the Living
Title: Judgment Day for the Living Question/Comments: What happens to the faith of the living during Judgment Day? Will everyone face a tortuous death due the destruction of the mountains and earth during Judgment Day? A tortuous death can only be imagined since the earth and mountains are to be crushed. Will death be based on good and bad deeds? Thank you. Answer: The Qur'an does not directly touch upon this matter. It only describes how dreadful and awesome the event will be in order to awaken us to the significance of that day. There are some Ahadith pertaining to the issue, which basically explain that the people in that time will be among the worst ever. According to these narrations, they will be engrossed in sin and next to no worship would exist. If these narrations are accepted then that perhaps answers your question. We must remain aware of the fact that Allah the exalted is the most Wise, Merciful and Just. He would never do injustice to anyone. If nature unleashes on a pious person, we can expect that this will wash away the person's sins and that God will definitely not make him or her face more than he or she can bear. It is narrated by Abu Sa'id Al-Khudri and Abu Huraira (Allah be please with them) that the Prophet (p) said: "No fatigue, no disease, nor sorrow, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins." (Sahih Bukhari) Indeed, concerning the day of Judgement Allah, the exalted declares that "they will not be wronged" ( Al Zumar 39:69) and therefore we are assured that whatever may befall a servant of the Almighty is put into account. The Qur'an states: "With Him are the keys of the unseen, the treasures that none knows but He. He knows whatever there is on the earth and in the sea. Not a leaf does fall but with His knowledge: there is not a grain in the darkness (or depths) of the earth, nor anything fresh or dry (green or withered), but is (inscribed) in a record clear (to those who can read)." - Al An'am 6:59 Hope this helps Hischam Khan March 1, 2005
